A new species of dwarf sea bass, genus Serranus (Serranidae: Actinopterygii), from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean Neotropical Ichthyology

Serranus aliceae n. sp. is described from Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo States, southeastern Brazilian coast. The species is readily distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: scales around the caudal peduncle 20 or 21; total gill rakers on first branchial arch 23-29; cheek-scales rows 5 or 6; and by the coloration of live specimens, which are reddish with a broad, conspicuous, white stripe from post-orbital region to the caudal-fin base and a white abdomen. Habitat dynamics interacting with species dispersal abilities could generate gradients in species diversity and prevalence of species traits when the latter are associated with species dispersal potential. Using a process‐based model of diversification constrained by a dispersal parameter, we simulated the interplay between reef habitat dynamics during the past 140 million years and dispersal, shaping lineage diversification history and assemblage composition globally. Acyrtus pauciradiatus, new species, is described on the basis of three specimens collected at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. It differs from its congeners by having a reduced number of rays in the pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins and is more isolated geographically, than any other species in the genus.

Characterization of thirteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers from the honeycomb grouper Epinephelus merra ArchiMer

Epinephelus merra (Serranidae) is the most common and widespread species of this genus, mostly found in reef habitats from South Africa to Central Pacific. Thirteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from this species. Polymorphism was studied in two localities from the Comoros archipelago-Moh,li and Moroni. Allelic diversity was 7.5, polymorphism ranging from 3 to 13 alleles. Overall heterozygosity was high with an average observed heterozygosity of 0.587. Three of these loci were characterised by heterozygote deficiencies for both populations. Finally, ten of the 13 developed primers could be used in future population genetics study of E.merra that might be useful in a context of marine biodiversity conservation.

Comparative phylogeography of the western Indian Ocean reef fauna ArchiMer

Assessing patterns of connectivity at the community and population levels is relevant to marine resource management and conservation. The present study reviews this issue with a focus on the western Indian Ocean (WIO) biogeographic province. This part of the Indian Ocean holds more species than expected from current models of global reef fish species richness. In this study, checklists of reef fish species were examined to determine levels of endemism in each of 10 biogeographic provinces of the Indian Ocean. Results showed that the number of endemic species was higher in the WIO than in any other region of the Indian Ocean. This study investigates the impact of Undaria pinnatifida on the reef fish assemblage associated with the coastal rocky reefs of Golfo Nuevo in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Undaria pinnatifida is a laminarian kelp, indigenous to the temperate regions of Japan, China and Korea. It has spread around the world by international shipping and has also been introduced in some regions for mariculture. Ensamblajes de peces arrecifales del área de Santa Marta y el Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona OceanDocs

Los ensamblajes de peces arrecifales del área de Santa Marta y del Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona (PNNT) se caracterizaron a partir de la riqueza, diversidad, equitatividad, abundancia relativa (AR) y frecuencia de observación (FO) y se evaluó el posible efecto del PNNT sobre dichos atributos. La información se obtuvo en 20 estaciones mediante el censo de buceo errante (30 minutos). Se encontraron un total de 180 especies de peces. Los análisis de varianza indicaron que el PNNT al parecer ha tenido un efecto sobre la diversidad y equitatividad de especies (p< 0.05) mientras la riqueza es similar a lo largo del área estudiada. En términos de composición, se encontró que las dos zonas evaluadas presentan una moderada similaridad (Índice de Jaccard 0.69)....

This study describes the structure and seasonal dynamics of the reef fish assemblages that inhabit the Nuevo and San José gulfs of the Argentine coast. It analyzes relationships between the structure of the assemblage and several habitat variables, with emphasis on shelter availability and refuge characteristics. The diets and feeding strategies of the most conspicuous fish species are described and their impact on the density of one of their preys is evaluated. Lagoon fish in New Caledonia are mainly caught by artisanal fisheries and subsistence fishing. Reef fish are the major component of this catch. The present study aimed at estimating these reef fish standing stocks and at finding the main factors influencing the distribution of these fish. Sampling of 904 stations was stratified according to three zones (north, east and west) and three reef types (barrier, intermediate and fringing). Fish communities exhibited strong heterogeneity in their distribution, showing higher biomass (maximum of 447 g.m(-2)) and total standing stock (43 000 tonnes) in the north zone than in the east and west zones. Evaluación de las asociaciones de peces arrecifales en el oeste del litoral de La Habana, zona noroccidental de Cuba OceanDocs

Se realizó una evaluación rápida de las asociaciones de peces en el sector oeste del litoral norte de La Habana, el cual está sometido a un alto nivel de estrés ambiental. Se hicieron censos visuales mediante transeptos lineales en siete estaciones de dicha zona, en cada una de ellas se realizaron 6 réplicas de 50 m de largo por 2 m de ancho, siguiendo la metodología AGRRA. Genetic structure of the reef grouper Epinephelus merra in the West Indian Ocean appears congruent with biogeographic and oceanographic boundaries ArchiMer

The reef fauna connectivity of the West Indian Ocean (WIO) is one of the least studied globally. Here we use genetic analyses of the grouper Epinephelus merra (Bloch 1793) to determine patterns of connectivity and to identify barriers to dispersal in this WIO marine area. Phylogeographic and population-level analyses were conducted on cytochrome b sequences and microsatellites (13 loci) from 557 individuals sampled in 15 localities distributed across the West Indian Ocean. The goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara is a large sized (> 400 kg) and critically endangered marine fish, which is protected in many countries, including Brazil. Through the application of semi-structured interviews, we investigated the local ecological knowledge of seven fishermen specialist on catching E. itajara from the Babitonga bay, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Long-term Trends in Coral Reef Fish Yields and Exploitation Rates of Commercial Species from Coastal Kenya OceanDocs

Analysis of long-term (1978–2001) marine fisheries data showed that Kenyan coralreefs produced an estimated 2–4 metric t/km2/year of demersal fish. A rapid overall decline in landings occurred during the 1990s. Yields (t/km2/year) showed bimodal peaks in 1982 (2.98) and 1991 (2.90). The average total landings dropped by 55% during the last decade following peak landings in 1982. Landings of the commercially important families (e.g., Siganidae, Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae and Serranidae) declined by about 40% during the last decade, with the groupers (Serranidae) showing the steepest (72%) decline. Los peces Gobiidae de los arrecifes del Caribe colombiano. III. El Género Coryphopterus OceanDocs

Se presenta información descriptiva y ecológica de nueve especies del género Coryphopterus (Pisces: Gobiidae) colectadas en los arrecifes, principalmente coralinos, del Caribe colombiano (incluyendo la Isla de Providencia).
