Habitat dynamics interacting with species dispersal abilities could generate gradients in species diversity and prevalence of species traits when the latter are associated with species dispersal potential. Using a process‐based model of diversification constrained by a dispersal parameter, we simulated the interplay between reef habitat dynamics during the past 140 million years and dispersal, shaping lineage diversification history and assemblage composition globally. The emerging patterns from the simulations were compared to current prevalence of species traits related to dispersal for 6315 tropical reef fish species. We found a significant spatial congruence between the prevalence of simulated low dispersal values and areas with a large proportion of... |

Coral and rocky reefs are very important ecosystems in terms of their diversity, productivity, abundance and beauty. Mozambique possesses extensive reef areas, where fish fauna is the main exploited resource. Nevertheless, the ecology of these resources is little studied. A recent report listed 794 reef-associated fishes known to occur in Mozambican coral and rocky reefs. This is a first accountancy of the high fish diversity of Mozambican reefs, which must be assessed. Reef-associated fish resources exploitation is conducted at three basic levels: (i) subsistence (artisanal fishery); (ii) commercial exploitation (semi-industrial reef fishery, ornamental fish trade and recreational diving); and (iii) sports fishing. Presently, the artisanal fishery is the... |

Las otras obras que han servido de base son: "Fishes of North and Middle America", Jordan & Evermann, 1896-1900, abreviado en el texto JEC "Check List of Fishes and Fish like Vertebrates of North and Middle America", Jordan, Evermann & Clark, 1928, abreviado JEC; y los dos vo lumenes publicados de "Fishes of the Western North Atlantic", Partes I y 11, Bigelow & Schroeder, 1948 y 1953, abreviado BS. |

Epinephelus merra (Serranidae) is the most common and widespread species of this genus, mostly found in reef habitats from South Africa to Central Pacific. Thirteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from this species. Polymorphism was studied in two localities from the Comoros archipelago-Moh,li and Moroni. Allelic diversity was 7.5, polymorphism ranging from 3 to 13 alleles. Overall heterozygosity was high with an average observed heterozygosity of 0.587. Three of these loci were characterised by heterozygote deficiencies for both populations. Finally, ten of the 13 developed primers could be used in future population genetics study of E.merra that might be useful in a context of marine biodiversity conservation. |

The two most important foreign exchange earning activities in the Seychelles are tourism and fisheries and therefore, the coastal areas and their management are of the greatest importance to the Seychelles government (Khadun, 1991). In recent years government policy has encouraged marine conservation (Procter, 1970; 1984-1989 National Development Plan) and is part way to fulfilling the programme outlined in the Environmental Management Plan of the Seychelles (EMPS, 1990-2000). To date, five marine areas have been designated as national marine parks covering about 23 000 ha with several more proposed parks and protected areas. However, financial constraints, a deficit of qualified personnel, lack of boundary delimitation, inadequate legislation and... |

The reef fauna connectivity of the West Indian Ocean (WIO) is one of the least studied globally. Here we use genetic analyses of the grouper Epinephelus merra (Bloch 1793) to determine patterns of connectivity and to identify barriers to dispersal in this WIO marine area. Phylogeographic and population-level analyses were conducted on cytochrome b sequences and microsatellites (13 loci) from 557 individuals sampled in 15 localities distributed across the West Indian Ocean. Additional samples from the Pacific Ocean were used to benchmark the WIO population structure. The high level of divergence revealed between Indian and Pacific localities (of about 4.5% in sequences) might be the signature of the major tectonic and climatic changes operating at the... |

The goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara is a large sized (> 400 kg) and critically endangered marine fish, which is protected in many countries, including Brazil. Through the application of semi-structured interviews, we investigated the local ecological knowledge of seven fishermen specialist on catching E. itajara from the Babitonga bay, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Local long-line fisheries for E. itajara seemed to be a disappearing tradition in the studied site, with a detailed inherent local ecological knowledge system, which is also being lost. Our study also showed that fishermen engaged in recent fisheries, such as spear-fishing, can also possess a detailed local ecological knowledge system. Through the analysis of fishermen local ecological... |

Analysis of long-term (1978–2001) marine fisheries data showed that Kenyan coralreefs produced an estimated 2–4 metric t/km2/year of demersal fish. A rapid overall decline in landings occurred during the 1990s. Yields (t/km2/year) showed bimodal peaks in 1982 (2.98) and 1991 (2.90). The average total landings dropped by 55% during the last decade following peak landings in 1982. Landings of the commercially important families (e.g., Siganidae, Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae and Serranidae) declined by about 40% during the last decade, with the groupers (Serranidae) showing the steepest (72%) decline. Analysis of landings per administrative district showed a 78% decline in the densely populated Mombasa district between the periods 1983–1991 and 1992–2001. The less... |
